CONNECTIVITY BUYING BRIEF

An upgrade needs a plan around it.

The essential questions before adding a Wi-Fi access point or a business desk phone.

Gadget in Mind editorial · 21 October 2026

01

Separate each device’s job

An access point provides wireless access; it does not automatically replace a router, modem or firewall. A SIP desk phone is an endpoint; it does not include a calling subscription. Identify the supporting equipment and service first.

02

Plan power as well as data

Confirm the required PoE standard, available switch power budget and whether an injector or adapter is included. Using Wi-Fi removes a data cable requirement in some setups, but a desk phone still needs power.

03

Match the environment

Confirm regional hardware, client devices and the chosen management system for an access point. For a phone, obtain provider approval for the exact model, hardware revision, firmware and headset. The product review contains the model-specific checks.

04

Test where people work

Pilot coverage, calling features and the actual application traffic in the intended rooms. Product generation and theoretical speed are useful identifiers, but they do not establish the result at a particular desk.
